To celebrate the 5th anniversary of Moulin Rouge! The Musical and the 25th anniversary of Baz Luhrmann’s iconic film, we created a houseplant-filled fantasy inspired by the romance, drama and bohemian spirit of Montmartre.
To set the garden stage, visitors passed through a spectacular heart-shaped gateway and into an unfolding love story, where houseplants became the backdrop, characters and atmosphere of two very different worlds.
Satine’s luxurious dressing room was brought to life through a rich, romantic planting palette of deep reds, burgundy and jewel tones, layered with velvety textures and dramatic foliage. In contrast, Christian’s garret was wild, expressive and untamed, with abundant greenery reflecting his creative mind and bohemian spirit.
As visitors promenaded through the garden, these contrasting spaces came together to tell the story of two people, two worlds and one great love. Along the way, they discovered a Green Fairy fountain, an Eiffel Tower-inspired obelisk and a romantic love-bench photo opportunity.
Every detail was designed to capture the unmistakable spirit of Moulin Rouge! — theatrical, extravagant, romantic and just a little bit rebellious — with houseplants taking centre stage.
Baz Luhrmann’s revolutionary film comes to life onstage in London’s West End. The Piccadilly Theatre has been transformed into a world of splendour and romance, of eye-popping excess, of glitz, grandeur, and glory!
